ABOUT US
Welcome to 1120 Press. We write about Buffalo’s punk, hardcore and DIY culture, including artists of all mediums and DIY businesses. From time to time, we'll also cover social & economic issues, since both shape our community and the art that gets made. We aren’t aiming to be the authoritative voice of the Buffalo scene. There are others more knowledgeable and better suited. We also aren’t trying to compete with anyone. All we are aiming to do is foster a sense of community and lift the art, and work, that’s happening in Buffalo. You can support our mission HERE. To learn more, see our FAQs HERE. If you have story ideas, tips, bands to promote or submissions, send it all our way at 1120press@gmail.com
MEET THE 1120 TEAM
FOUNDER/PUBLISHER — 1120 Press was founded by Matt Smith, a Buffalo-born and raised journalist, author, and photographer. Smith spent two decades working for daily newspapers across New York State and the Associated Press. A resident of Hamburg, he is in the Buffalo-based punk band, The Sneers. He is also a member of the experimental alt-rock duo Clown Teeth , as well as the Washington D.C.-based metal-adjacent band, Sin Lung — both with his brother Joe (formerly of Snapcase). His photo work can be seen at the Gallery link and at mattsmithimages.com
Senior Writer Benjamin Joe is a veteran music journalist, print reporter and author. Besides serving as the senior writer for 1120 Press, Ben runs his own music blog, Buffalo Music Players. He is also a reporter with the Lockport Union Sun & Journal and author of the novel Nirvana Dreams.
Columnist/Writer Anthony Wachowiak is a guitarist, vocalist and songwriter for the Buffalo-area band Mothers Nature's Son. Anthony reports and writes for 1120 Press, bringing a unique insight to our publication from the perspective of an artist on the inside of the local scene.
Staff Photographer Sarah Bruno is an ever-present face on the local scene, frequently shooting hardcore shows throughout Buffalo as well as other indie performances. A student in ECC's fine arts program, Sara joined 1120 Press in November 2023.
